The North Adriatic Clean Hydrogen Investment Platform (NACHIP) consortium held its regular project meeting in Zagreb, Croatia, hosted by pilot partner DOK-ING. The meeting brought together partners from Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region to align on project progress and upcoming activities.
As highlighted by the project coordinator, Matija Pavlovčič from Institut Jožef Stefan:
“In addition to regular monthly meetings, NACHIP project partners come together in person every six months, which also provides an opportunity to visit pilot sites where innovative technologies are being developed. The meeting focused on reviewing overall project activities, with particular attention to concluding the first Open Call process and finalising the progress report for the first half of the project. The project is progressing smoothly and in line with the planned timeline.”
As part of the programme, consortium partners visited DOK-ING Energo in Sesvetski Kraljevec, where an innovative approach to producing green hydrogen from waste recycling is being advanced.
DOK-ING Energo Pilot
DOK-ING Energo is spearheading the development and demonstration of a universal gasification plant for waste materials. This pilot project is a critical component of the NACHIP value chain, focusing on the conversion of non-recyclable solid waste into high-value energy carriers.
Innovative Waste-to-Hydrogen Technology
The DOK-ING Energo gasification system operates as a thermo-chemical process that breaks down waste in an oxygen-controlled environment. Unlike traditional incineration, this technology produces a hydrogen-rich synthesis gas (syngas) and a charred residue (ash), both of which have significant industrial utility. Hydrogen is extracted from syngas and supplied to customers as a final main product of the system.
Strengthening Regional Energy Independence
The NACHIP project brings together 12 partners from Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region. By validating nascent technologies at high Technology Readiness Levels, DOK-ING Energo and its partners are bridging the gap between innovation and market entry. The gasification pilot addresses the “Urban Areas” value chain, providing a replicable model for cities to manage waste while generating clean, local energy.
About DOK-ING Energo
DOK-ING Energo, a subsidiary of the DOK-ING Group, is dedicated to the development of breakthrough energy technologies. Leveraging the Group’s decades of experience in complex robotic systems, DOK-ING Energo focuses on gasification and green hydrogen production to foster a carbon-neutral, circular economy.
NACHIP – Accelerating the Hydrogen Economy
The NACHIP consortium consists of twelve public and private organisations from Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Its members are Institut Jožef Stefan (lead partner), META Group, META Circularity, FER Zagreb, Leonitus, Serichim, Faber, ECUBES, KSSENA, ETRA, DOK-ING, and the Municipality of Velenje.
The project’s mission is to accelerate the North Adriatic Hydrogen Ecosystem by validating and demonstrating hydrogen technologies across production, urban areas, and mobility, and by creating local hydrogen alliances to anchor future growth. NACHIP also supports up to eighteen SMEs with cascade funding of up to €60,000 each, combined with a two-tier acceleration programme to build capacity, attract investment, and prepare technologies for market uptake.
NACHIP is part of the North Adriatic Hydrogen Ecosystem whose initiative is the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley, the first transnational hydrogen valley in the European Union bringing together Slovenia, Croatia, and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of Italy.
Funding and Strategic Framework
NACHIP is co-financed by the European Union through the Interregional Innovation Investments I3 Instrument. It is implemented by EISMEA – European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency under the European Regional Development Fund. The project has a total budget of 10.5 million euros, including a 7.6 million euros EU grant which covers 70 % of the costs. Almost 80 % of the funding is dedicated to maturing hydrogen technologies and supporting SMEs, particularly in the less developed regions of Eastern Slovenia and Central and Mediterranean Croatia. The project runs for three years from September 2024 until August 2027.
